Recreational Craft Directive

Countdown to 2016 has started... All you need to know on the NEW Recreational Craft Directive, the key EU legislation for the boating industry

About the current Directive 94/25/EC and its revision (valid until 17 January 2016)

Directive 94/25/EC as amended by Directive 2003/44/EC on recreational craft is the centrepiece of the European Union’s legislation for the boating industry. It sets minimum safety and environmental requirements for boats between 2.5m and 24m, personal watercraft, engines and some components. It guarantees their suitability for sale and use in Europe. Adopted in 1994, the Directive was later amended in 2003 to include exhaust and noise emission limits from marine engines. The Directive is currently under revision in the European Parliament and the Council, with an expected adoption by the end of 2012-early 2013. Under the proposal, stricter exhaust emissions will apply to engines in the future. The proposal also takes into account European Boating Industry’s proposal for the mandatory fitting of holding tanks or on-board water treatment systems to prevent discharge of sewage at sea. We also contributed to the modernization of the directive and the reinforcement of market surveillance provisions.
